The Holy Orthodox Church of Uganda witnessed a momentous and historic occasion with the official inauguration of the Mityana Metropolis, held on 27th June 2025 at Kawanga Hill in Buwalula. This landmark event marked a significant step in the growth and establishment of Orthodox Christianity in Uganda, symbolizing both spiritual maturity and institutional development within the Church.
The day began in a deeply reverent and spiritual manner with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, the heart of Orthodox worship. The service was presided over by His Eminence Bishop Gregory from the United States of America. Surrounded by clergy and faithful, the liturgy was conducted with solemnity, incorporating sacred hymns, incense, and traditional Orthodox prayers that uplifted the hearts of all in attendance. This sacred beginning set a powerful tone for the entire day, reminding the congregation that all milestones in the Church are grounded in worship and thanksgiving to God.
The inauguration drew a large gathering of dignitaries from various sectors of society. Religious leaders, representatives of local government, community elders, and distinguished guests were present to witness this important milestone. Their attendance highlighted the growing recognition of the Orthodox Church’s role not only as a spiritual institution but also as a contributor to social and community development within Uganda.
Clergy from different parishes across the region gathered in unity, dressed in their traditional liturgical vestments. Their presence reflected the unity and continuity of the Orthodox faith, as well as the shared mission of spreading the Gospel and strengthening the Church. The visual display of vestments, icons, and ceremonial order added beauty and sacredness to the occasion, reinforcing the rich heritage of Orthodox tradition.
The choice of Kawanga Hill in Buwalula as the venue for this inauguration was both meaningful and symbolic. This location serves as an important center for the Church’s activities, including theological education and spiritual formation. Its serene and elevated setting provided a fitting environment for reflection, prayer, and celebration. The hill stands as a beacon of faith, representing the steady growth of the Church in Uganda.
Throughout the ceremony, messages of encouragement, unity, and hope were shared by various speakers. Emphasis was placed on the importance of the Mityana Metropolis in guiding the faithful, promoting sound doctrine, and strengthening the spiritual life of the community. The establishment of the Metropolis was described as a new chapter—one that will enhance pastoral care, expand outreach programs, and deepen the Church’s presence in the region.
The role of the local community in the success of the event was both visible and impactful. Members of the community actively participated in organizing and supporting the celebration. Their presence and enthusiasm reflected a strong bond between the Church and the people it serves. Cultural expressions, joyful interactions, and shared moments of fellowship created an atmosphere of unity and belonging among all who attended.
The inauguration also served as a reminder of the Church’s broader mission beyond worship. The Mityana Metropolis is expected to play a key role in advancing education, supporting charitable initiatives, and empowering communities. Through institutions such as seminaries, schools, and outreach programs, the Church continues to address both spiritual and social needs, contributing to holistic development.
As the event unfolded, it became clear that this was not only a ceremonial gathering but also a declaration of faith, growth, and commitment. The establishment of the Metropolis signifies stability, leadership, and readiness to serve a growing Orthodox population in Uganda and beyond. It stands as a testimony to years of dedication, perseverance, and divine guidance.
The day concluded with heartfelt gratitude to God for the successful inauguration and for the blessings bestowed upon the Church. Attendees departed with renewed faith and a shared vision for the future. The Mityana Metropolis now stands as a pillar of Orthodox Christianity in Uganda, committed to spreading love, spirit, faith, and unity in Christ.
