With hearts full of thanksgiving and joy, the Holy Orthodox Metropolis of Mityana celebrated the glorious Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary on 15/28 August 2026. The celebration was marked by deep prayer, reverence, thanksgiving, and Christian fellowship as Orthodox faithful gathered to honour the Blessed Mother of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
This sacred feast, one of the greatest and most beloved celebrations in the Orthodox Christian Church, brought together clergy, monastics, religious leaders, government representatives, faithful, benefactors, friends of the Church, and well-wishers from across Uganda. It was a powerful witness of faith, unity, and love within the Body of Christ.
The celebrations were presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Nektarios (Leonard Lubega), Metropolitan of Mityana and Exarch of Africa, who warmly received the Honourable Minister Joseph Kyofatogabye, representing Her Excellency Major (Rtd.) Jessica Alupo, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda. The Vice President’s representation highlighted the importance of the occasion and reflected the continued spirit of partnership, respect, and shared commitment between the Church and the Government in promoting peace, moral values, and national unity.
The Feast of the Dormition commemorates the peaceful falling asleep of the Most Holy Theotokos and her glorious translation into heavenly life. It is a celebration filled with hope, reminding all Christians of Christ’s victory over death and the promise of eternal life. During the Divine Liturgy and thanksgiving services, the faithful offered heartfelt prayers, sang hymns of praise, and sought the loving intercession of the Ever-Virgin Mary for the Church, the nation, and the entire world.

Your presence, prayers, support, and commitment strengthened the unity of our Orthodox family and made this celebration a memorable testimony of God’s grace and abundant love. Every contribution, whether through prayer, service, or generosity, helped make this sacred occasion spiritually uplifting and successful.
As we conclude this joyful celebration, we humbly pray that the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary continues to intercede for Uganda, our Church, our leaders, our families, and all our people. May Almighty God, through her prayers, grant our nation peace, unity, protection, wisdom, good health, prosperity, and abundant blessings.
